Tucked away on Portugal’s stunning western Algarve coast, Salema remains one of the region’s best-kept secrets. While much of the Algarve’s southern shoreline has seen extensive development, this charming fishing village sits within the protected Costa Vicentina Natural Park, preserving its authentic character and natural beauty – making it the perfect Algarve holiday destination.
A Village Frozen in Time
As you wind your way down the main N125 road, you’ll find yourself in a postcard-perfect Portuguese village. Traditional whitewashed houses adorned with blue trim dot the landscape, their distinctive latticed chimney pots rising against the sky. The blue accents aren’t just decorative – local tradition says that they ward off evil spirits.
In the surrounding countryside, wildflowers carpet the fields and storks build their nests on top of telegraph poles, creating scenes that feel worlds away from modern resort towns.
Living Fishing Heritage
Salema’s soul lies in its working fishing community. The cobblestoned Rua dos Pescadores (Fishermen’s Street) leads you down to the beach, lined with traditional fishermen’s houses. Several of these charming buildings now house family-run restaurants that extend their seating towards the sand.
Each morning, local fishermen bring in their catch of octopus, sardines, sea bass and gilt-head bream. You can watch them unload their boats near the old covered marketplace, then spend the rest of the morning mending nets. It’s a glimpse into a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

The Beach: Salema’s Crown Jewel
The village’s half-mile stretch of golden sand has earned Blue Flag certification, recognising exceptional water quality, safety standards and environmental stewardship. The beach offers ideal conditions for swimming and windsurfing, with gentler waves than the Atlantic-facing western coast.
The crystal-clear waters lap against the gently sloping shore, depositing small shells rather than seaweed. Even at high tide, there’s plenty of sand for sunbathers and families.

Ancient Wonders Beneath Your Feet
Salema holds a remarkable secret: dinosaur footprints dating back approximately 150 million years to the Lower Cretaceous period. Discovered by Lisbon University geologists in 2001, these prehistoric tracks are clearly visible in the sedimentary rocks at the western end of the beach, near the staircase leading up to the Casa das Estevas clifftop.
The yellow limestone formations at either end of the beach tell their own geological story, topped with contrasting red Quaternary strata that create a stunning palette against the azure sky. Fossil enthusiasts will find shells, scales and other ancient remnants embedded in these rocks.
Natural Beauty Above and Beyond
Take the clifftop path from the beach to explore neighboring Boca do Rio cove, close to Villas Praia Dourada, Sol e Mar and Vista Paraiso. During summer months, sea daffodils bloom along the path, while the surrounding scrub and trees host colourful wildlife.
Keep your eyes peeled for hoopoes, distinctive birds with brilliant crown feathers and bee-eaters – vivid mixes of gold-brown, turquoise and yellow that perch on telegraph wires between their acrobatic flights catching insects.
Dining in Salema
Fresh seafood takes centre stage in Salema’s restaurants. Four of our favourites are Boia, right on the beach edge, where you’ll enjoy grilled fish, meats and salads. Atlantico on the main square serves traditional Portuguese dishes featuring octopus and squid as well as chicken kebabs. For sophisticated evening dining, Agua na Boca on Rua dos Pescadores offers excellent options for meat lovers, while Em Lume Brando offers a more contemporary take away from the village centre.

Getting to Salema
Salema is just over an hour’s drive from Faro Airport, with regular bus connections via Lagos for those without a car. The journey itself is part of the experience, taking you through the authentic Algarve landscape.
