When people ask us what makes Salema so special, the weather always comes up in conversation. There’s something magical about our corner of the Algarve – the way the Atlantic breeze keeps things fresh even in midsummer, how the sun seems to linger a little longer over the cliffs at sunset and the gentle climate that makes every season feel welcoming.
Winter in Salema: Mild and Wonderfully Peaceful
Our winters are nothing like what you’d expect if you’re coming from northern Europe or the UK. From December through February, you’ll find temperatures sitting comfortably between 11°C and 16°C. It’s jacket weather, but the kind where you’re unzipping by midday as the sun breaks through.
This is actually one of our favourite times to explore Salema. The coastal paths are quiet, the local cafés have that cosy warmth and you can wander the Saturday markets without the summer buzz. Perfect for those long afternoon walks along the beach with the whole shoreline to yourself.

Spring: When The Algarve Comes Alive
April and May bring something really special to Salema and the Algrave. As temperatures climb to 18°C-22°C, the hillsides around the village burst into colour. Wildflowers appear everywhere – along the cliff paths, in the fields behind the village, even poking through cracks in the old stone walls.
The sea is still a bit brisk for most swimmers, but the weather is absolutely ideal for hiking the Rota Vicentina, cycling along the coast, or simply sitting at a beachfront restaurant with a glass of vinho verde, watching fishing boats bob in the harbor.
Summer: Pure Algarve Sunshine
July and August are when Salema truly shines. Days regularly reach around 30°C, and the beach becomes the heart of village life. The water warms up beautifully – perfect for swimming, snorkeling around the rocks at the east end of the beach, or trying your hand at stand-up paddleboarding.
Here’s what we love though: even when it’s properly hot during the day, the evenings cool down nicely. There’s always that Atlantic breeze rolling in around sunset, making dinner on a terrace absolutely perfect. No sticky, uncomfortable nights – just that pleasant warmth that makes you want to linger over one more glass of wine.

Autumn: The Sweet Spot
September might just be the best-kept secret. The sea is at its warmest from soaking up summer sun, but the crowds thin out as families head home for the school year. Temperatures stay around 20°C-24°C through most of September, gradually cooling into October.
This is prime time if you appreciate a quieter pace. The light takes on this gorgeous golden quality, the local restaurants aren’t packed, and you can actually get a good spot on the beach without arriving at dawn.
Why Salema’s Weather Feels Different
Our position on the coast does something wonderful – it smooths out the extremes. While inland Algarve towns can get sweltering in summer or surprisingly chilly in winter, Salema stays moderate year-round. The ocean acts like a natural thermostat, keeping things balanced.
Rainfall? It’s genuinely minimal most of the year. We do get some rain between November and March, but even then, it tends to come in short bursts rather than those dreary weeks of drizzle you might be used to. And honestly, after the dry summer months, those rains make everything green and fresh again.

Planning Your Visit
The beauty of Salema is that there really isn’t a bad time to visit – it just depends on what you’re after. Beach lovers and sun worshippers will want June through September. Hikers and those seeking tranquillity might prefer March through May or October through November. And if you’re looking to escape a harsh northern winter? December through February offers mild, peaceful days that feel like a gift.
Whatever season brings you to our little village, you’ll find the weather plays along beautifully. That’s the Salema promise—sunshine, sea breezes, and that perfect coastal climate that keeps us all coming back.
